Summer fêtes Come in July, August or September

a local town fete. This, basically, is a 3-day party
and every village, town and city has at least one
a year. During the day there's likely to be a special
market with local produce and artisans showing and
selling their work. At night however, it really cranks
up. Sometimes you can buy a ticket for a meal, sometimes
there's a ball, sometimes there are fireworks, sometimes
just music. What you can guarantee is that after
a warm-up of more traditional French songs, there
will be a hugely energetic 10-piece band complete
with go-go dancers who will play a non-stop 4 hour
set including at least 30 changes of costume and
a truly astonishing range of music covering Abba
to Black Sabbath. Even more impressive is that the
concert is free and attended by all ages. It's very,
very good fun.
It is said round here, that in the summer, there
are at least 3 concerts you could go to every night.
The local tabac has a sort of mini, free Time Out
called Olé telling you what's on and where
in the Languedoc which could be anything from Julia
Migenes singing opera in Beziers to the Rolling Stones
